Beat the winter “blues”

Winter can be a tough time for people. It’s cold, wet, dark and long. It can be hard to think of things to occupy your mind to keep from going insane. Well, a man from Minneapolis, Minnesota may have just the thing to make winter interesting.

Tom Grotting has become a legend since he started freezing pants and placing them all over town to keep everyone entertained. Since the Polar Vortex of 2013, Grotting has been soaking blue jeans in cold water. As they begin to freeze he shapes them to make them stand alone and look like they are “on the go.” This process takes less than 30 minutes. He sets them up anywhere from outside a local coffee shop to by parking meters near his company. Most of the time the pants are able to be used after freezing them. There are times though, when Grotting used them so much that they became too ratty to keep.

After posting the photos, Grotting got over 600 “likes” and became a viral sensation. Grotting told ABC News, “I mostly do it for my neighbor, Diane. The winter gets a little long and she doesn’t like winter very much so it’s mostly entertainment for Diane.” In the words of Distractify writer Mark Pygas, “Some heroes don't wear capes. It almost makes it worth freezing your butt off.”

However, not everyone appreciates what Grotting is trying to accomplish, “The kids hate it,” Grotting stated. “My daughter is in the band and had a big rehearsal with the trumpet players and she texted me and said, ‘Dad, the trumpets saw the pants.’”

Next time you find yourself at Goodwill, pick up a pair of old jeans and bring some laughter to a season that can be filled with hate. When you do be sure to send us pictures at usfencounter@gmail.com!
