For the first time in more than 20 years, the United States Soccer Federation has released a new crest. U.S. Soccer hinted at a new crest last week and confirmed it would be coming after they changed their Twitter avatar to a plain white background last Friday.
The new crest was released via social media campaign on Monday and was designed in conjunction with Nike, who has been the chief sponsor and uniform supplier of U.S. Soccer since 1995.
The new crest was revealed through the official Twitter account of U.S. Soccer and from National Team players such as Jozy Altidore, Ali Krieger and Julie Johnston as well as celebrities like "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts.
The previous crest, seen to the right, had been around since 1995 and was often criticized for its bizarre color scheme, which featured blue stripes and white stars on a red background, the opposite of the American flag. The new crest is a simpler design that features the letters USA placed above red and white stripes.
The switch had been in the works for more than two years before being publicized earlier this month.
