Ever since the news spread that “Gilmore Girls” will be returning to Stars Hallow this past year, fans have been wondering if the beloved Sookie St. James, who is portrayed by Melissa McCarthy, will also be returning. After months of speculation, McCarthy has confirmed that she will be making a return to Stars Hallow when she told Ellen DeGeneres this week about the good news. “About a half an hour ago we figured out that I am going to go back and do it and I am so excited,” she told Ellen on Friday’s show. Because of scheduling conflicts, McCarthy was previously not involved in the reboot.
“Gilmore Girls,” originally a series on The WB about the relationship between a mother and daughter, will be making a Netflix revival with four 90-minute episodes. The show follows the mother and daughter as they make their way through their small town of Stars Hallow, Connecticut. McCarthy plays the best friend of the mother, Lorelai Gilmore.
McCarthy, who gained major attention and success after her comedic role in “Bridesmaids” in 2011, was born in Plainfeld, Illinois and graduated from St. Francis Academy (now Joliet Catholic Academy). “I’m very happy to go back to Stars Hallow,” McCarthy says of the reboot. “They’re gonna be amazing.”
Netflix has not yet released dates for the revival, but filming for the series is said to be complete this summer.
