Pups for Your Health: How Owning a Dog Improves Your Well-Being

Their faithfulness and loyalty are just a few reasons why we adore our beloved pet pups. Besides the many positives that come along with owning a dog, researchers have found having a dog for a pet increases our well-being.

According to a study performed by Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, a dog and their owner will have synced heart beats. In the study performed by the university, the researchers strapped heart rate monitors on both bogs and their owners. When the owner and their dogs were separated, the heartbeats were not beating in the same patterns. When they were reunited, the heartbeats began to follow and mirror one another.

Mia Cobb, one of the researchers at Monash University, stated “I was impressed at how much they came together. The fact that they shared patterns so closely surprised me. This kind of effect of experiencing a lowered heart rate makes a significant difference to our overall well-being.” A lowered heart rate is linked with lower stress, and in today’s stress induced world, having a dog could help us immensely.

Another researcher, Dr. Craig Duncan, stated, “Stress is a major killer in today’s society and, as we get busier and busier, it is something that is really important for us to try to help with. The Hearts Aligned project aims to show how pet ownership can help us positively deal with the stressors of everyday life.”

Owning a dog can also help reduce allergies, according to a study performed by Dr. Tolly Epstein of Allergy Partners of Central Indiana. According to The Telegraph, Epstein and a team of researchers conducted a long-term study with 636 children. They founded that children who had a pet dog were less likely to develop allergies as they grew older.

According to the American Heart Association, pet owners have much healthier hearts compared to those who don’t. Besides syncing our heart, lowering stress and reducing allergies, having a dog can lead us to live a more active lifestyle. Play time and walks are a must for most dogs, so our beloved canine companion can gift us many health benefits in addition to their love and devotion.
