The Orlando Massacre: What We Know

June 14, 2016

In the early hours on Sunday, June 12 in Orlando, the deadliest mass shooting to take place in the history of the United States happened in Orlando, Florida at Pulse, a popular LGBT nightclub.

Over 320 people were inside enjoying the “Latin Flavor” event that the club was hosting when the American-born gunman opened fire with a 223-caliber AR-type rifle, Glock handgun and numerous rounds of ammunition at approximately 2:00 a.m. ET. An officer on duty at the nightclub and two other officers open fire on the shooter resulting in a gun battle. The shooter backs inside the club, holding hostages.

According to CNN, the shooter called 911 at approximately 2:22 a.m. ET pledging allegiance to ISIS while also mentioning the horrific Boston Marathon bombing attack.

The shooter was not apprehended and killed until approximately 5:00 a.m. in which a heavily armed SWAT team was forced to use an armored vehicle to smash down a door to get inside. It was not until 5:53 a.m. that the Orlando Police tweeted that the shooter was dead:
