TMZ, the popular celebrity news website, broke the news about Angelina Jolie filing for divorce after two years of marriage with Brad Pitt, citing that they had irreconcilable differences. Pitt found out about the divorce filings a day before it made headlines around the world.
Multiple reasons have surfaced that supposedly led to Jolie’s decision to call it quits with the “Fury” star. There are allegations of infidelity with French actress Marion Cotillard and Pitt, child abuse with their children, substance abuse and anger problems.
Jolie is asking for sole physical custody of their six children with visitation rights granted to Pitt. TMZ reported that Jolie's entertainment attorney, Robert Offer, issued a statement saying she made the decision "for the health of the family." According to People Magazine, an insider told reported that during an incident that occurred on the couple’s private plane, Pitt “was drunk, and there was an argument between him and Angelina.” One of the oldest children, Maddox, 15, stepped in to calm both parents down. The source continued, “There was a parent-child argument which was not handled in the right way and escalated more than it should have.”
Pitt issued a statement to CNN regarding the private plane incident saying, "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."
While Pitt was allegedly intoxicated during the private plane incident, he does not have a “Hollywood reputation” of heavy drinking. According to Yahoo Celebrity, Pitt has openly confessed his love of marijuana during an interview when he stopped using the drug for over a year.
When finding out about the proceedings with the divorce, fingers were pointed at Pitt’s “Allied” co-star, Marion Cotillard. Pitt and Cotillard started filming earlier this year for their movie, and back in May 2016, radio personality and television talk show host, Wendy Williams, claimed there were sources saying both co-stars were getting “too close for comfort” on-set of the movie. Williams gave her opinion of the situation, saying of Jolie, “How she won him is how she’ll lose him.”
Cotillard addressed these rumors of the alleged affair on her Instagram account, stating, “I do very much wish that Angelina and Brad, both who I deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment.”
Madame Tussauds Wax Museum has decided to change where Jolie and Pitt’s wax figures are placed and issued a statement through their Twitter account. “Following the news that has shocked celebrity watchers worldwide, we can confirm we have separated Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's figures.” In the venue, Robert Pattinson is placed between the now separated couple.
The “Brangelina” couple were first romantically linked during the release of the 2005 movie “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” at which time Pitt was still married to popular television sitcom “Friends” star, Jennifer Aniston. Shortly after they split, Jolie and Pitt began dating and welcomed their first child together in 2006, Shiloh Nouvel. The couple married in 2014 but have been together for over ten years. They have six children together.
