Woman Pleads Guilty to Killing Father

October 18, 2016

Crystal Brooke Howell pleaded guilty Monday, October 10, to shooting and killing her father in February of 2014. The now 20-year-old was convicted of first-degree murder and concealment of death for her father, Michael Joseph Howell, when she was 17-years-old.

According to the Huffington Post, Howell decided to kill her father after getting into an argument about her shoplifting. She shot him while he slept on the couch.

According to reports from CBS, Howell hid her father’s body in a plastic container in a storage shed belonging to her family. Guests found the body about a month later and called the authorities. Crystal Howell was arrested on March 23, 2014 in Richmond county.

Howell initially lied about the cause of her father’s death. Assistant District Attorney Jeff Jones said, “Miss Howell had previously told her friends that her father had killed himself.” According to the Citezen-Times, Jones said that Howell started using her father’s car and spending his money. She then had some of her friends move in, took drugs, partied and even had a stripper pole installed in the kitchen.

Reports say that Howell’s attorney told the court that her client had a metal health history. She has been sentenced to 25 years in prison before she can apply for parole. According to the Huffington Post, “Howell will serve her sentence at the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.”
