FBI Reopens Hillary Clinton Email Case
FBI Director James Comey reopened the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email matter Firday, October 28. According to CBS News, Comey has stated that the 1,000 new emails found on Clinton’s aide, Huma Abedin’s computer appear to contain “pertinent” information into Clinton’s classified email deletion case.
According to CNBC, Comey had previously closed the investigation into Clinton’s email server, but felt it was important to reopen the case due to the arrival of potential new evidence. In a letter from Comey to leaders in Congress, he stated that even though “the FBI cannot yet assess whether or not this material may be significant, and I cannot predict how long it will take us to complete this additional work, I believe it is important to update your Committees about our efforts in light of my previous testimony."
The FBI accidentally came across these new Clinton emails while they were investigating Clinton’s aide, Huma Abedin’s husband Anthony Weiner. Weiner was under investigation for sexting a 15-year-old girl. CBS reports that the FBI found the new emails between Clinton and Abedin on the laptop shared by Abedin and her husband. Though there is no official word on what the new emails contained, CBS claims that “it was the nature of a few of those emails that raised concerns” for the FBI.
Investigators in the FBI are currently working to review all the emails to determine if they contain new information into Clinton’s email severe case. It is possible that some of the emails they find will match some of the emails they have already previously investigated. Clinton has since then called for the FBI to release any information they receive from the emails. Clinton told reporters in Iowa that she is confident that whatever they find will not change the outcome they reached in July during her first investigation.
Moments after the news broke, Donald Trump took to the stage in his Manchester rally to praise the FBI’s decision to reopen the case. Trump stated that Clinton’s “criminal and illegal conduct … threatens the security of the United States of America.”
Are these new emails going to end up being a big deal? Only time will tell.
