#HipsterSanta Returns to Portland
In contrast to the classic red-suited, full-bearded St. Nick we typically see around the holidays, Portland, OR is sporting a “hipster” Santa for the second year in a row.
Teens and adults can relive their childhood memories this season by visiting Hipster Santa at Pioneer Place mall. His look is completed with boxy black glasses, candy cane earrings and a man-bun to top it all off. Tattoos cover his arms, advertising “naughty” and “nice” to those who get close enough to see while sharing their Christmas list with him. Daily Mail commented about an Instagram post, “One photo shows a faux deer head above Hipster Santa – with his traditional red-and-white costume hanging from a coat rack nearby.” For some, Christmas will be anything but traditional this winter.
Oregon Live explained that the mall is dubbing it “a unique Portland Santa experience,” and that the idea was imagined by a Portland design studio in 2012. Visitors have said that Hipster Santa is very approachable and fun to talk to. He’s been surfing social media the past few days as well, with thousands of Twitter and Instagram posts dedicated to the “festive figure.” One woman joked in her caption, “He knows if you’ve been buying organic, fair trade coffee.” From his Christmas cardigan down to his Converse high-tops, he is the epitome of #hipster.
An article from The Oregonian noted, “This fresh, Millennial-inspired #Santa will be back at the mall for scheduled meet-and-great appearances… Pioneer Place is also offering a boring, hat-wearing Santa, who lap you can reserve for your child to sit in every day until Christmas.” For more specific information on dates and times, click here.
