It’s 2017 and there is no better way to welcome the new year than to reflect and appreciate the awesome slate of games that were given to us last year. 2016 was a great year for gaming, but these three games stood in a tier of their own.
Game of the year: Overwatch (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Blizzard has done it again, adding yet another great game to its glowing resume. “Overwatch” is a team-based first person shooter that is strictly online. What makes this game a gem is its character variety, with 20 different heroes to choose from that all play extremely different from one another. This gives the game great depth and value for its cost. It has 6v6 quick play, ranked matches and a variety of arcade modes that emphasize team cooperation, which is a refreshing change from mainstream first person shooters. Overall, a great team-based game that will provide you countless hours of fun with your friends.
Runner-up: Dark Souls 3 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Brutally difficult, but simply beautiful. This open world RPG improves upon everything that makes the “Dark Souls” series great. Its haunting atmosphere its rich lore, this is a must play for all hardcore gamers. New players beware! While everything about this game is great, from graphics to story to gameplay, it is very difficult and you will die a lot – but the reward after defeating a boss or completing the game is worth the hours of grinding and heart ache.
Runner-up: Mafia 3 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
2K studios has created a brilliant and somewhat controversial game with “Mafia 3.” The open world third person shooter has superb graphics and an even better story. The gameplay is pretty smooth but isn’t the highlight of the game. What makes this game stand out from the rest is that it is the first game to really address the issue of race and the nature of racism after the Vietnam War. The game is set in 1968 in the city of New Bordeaux (New Orleans) and follows the life of Lincoln Clay. Overall, the story and soundtrack are excellent which makes up for the average gameplay.
