I don’t know about y’all, but I’m OVER homework. So this spring break instead of worksheets and reading assignments, I going to be binge-watching shows on Netflix. From “Shameless” to “Bob’s Burgers,” here’s my list of shows that will help you say “f*** homework.”
8) “A Series of Unfortunate Events”
Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes, K. Todd Freeman, Presley Smith
This Netflix newcomer is making waves and may sound familiar to you since it is based on the Daniel Handler’s quirky books you might have read as child. According to TIME, people who have read the books will delight at the Netflix adaptation. However, first-timers will have to watch a few episodes before the colorful menagerie of characters and the dogged perseverance of the Baudelaire orphans win them over.
7) “The Killing”
Starring: Mireille Enos, Joel Kinnaman
WARNNING: This series is only for people who can handle cliffhangers. This show would most likely piss you off…but it’s worth it to binge-watch. The first two seasons focus on Detective Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Holder investigating the murder of teenage Rosie Larsen (Katie Findlay) in rainy, murky Seattle. The show will keep you guessing.
Starring: Gillian Jacobs, Paul Rust, Claudia O’Doherty
If you like “Nick and Nora’s Infinit Playlist” and “500 Days of Summer,” this is your show. It follows a rebellious Mickey (Gillian Jacobs) and good-natured Gus (Paul Rust) who try to navigate the thrills and agonies of modern relationships. Season two coming March 10.
5) “A Different World”
Starring: Lisa Bonet, Jasmine Guy, Marisa Tomei, Dawnn Lewis, Loretta Devine, Kadeem Hardison, Mary Alice, Darryl M. Bell, Sinbad, Jada Pinkett
This show gets the black friend seal of approval. This is a great series which follows a group of friends at a fictional historically black college named Hillman. Although this show was set in the late ’80s and early ’90s, it is still relevant today because it deals with social issues like racism, rape, interracial couples and more. However, fair warning that the first season is a crime; luckily the show got a new director the second season.
4) “Sons of Anarchy”
Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Mark Boone Junior, Dayton Callie, Kim Coates, Tommy Flanagan, Ryan Hurst, Johnny Lewis, William Lucking, Theo Rossi, Maggie Siff, Ron Perlman
You’ll want to watch this show because of guys with beards on motorcycles…aka Charlie Hunnam. However, you’ll stay because the show has a good story with a great cast
3) “Bob’s Burgers”
Starring: H. Jon Benjamin, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, Kristen Schaal, John Roberts
As Bob (H. Jon Benjamin) says in the season two finale, reading a review of the diner, “We did have a rather unique and strangely inspiring experience while we were there. This shabby little dive seems to hold a special spot in the dingy town’s heart.” This is a show you didn’t know you needed in your life.
2) “Parks and Recreation”
Starring: Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, Aziz Ansari, Adam Scott, Rob Lowe, Chris Pratt, Aubrey Plaza, Rashida Jones
Treat yo’ self to the comedy. This show has some of the most unique and interesting characters in comedy today. The same people from “The Office” and “Saturday Night Live” created this show, so you know it’s a good one. Amy Poehler plays Leslie Knope, a mid-level government employee who is trying to convert an abandoned construction pit into a usable community park while a documentary camera crew follows her every step…and misstep.
Starring: William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum, Justin Chatwin, Ethan Cutkosky, Shanola Hampton, Steve Howey, Emma Kenney, Cameron Monaghan, Jeremy Allen White, Laura Slade Wiggins, Joan Cusack, Emma Greenwell, Zach McGowan, Noel Fisher, Jake McDorman, Emily Bergl, Isidora Goreshter
There is a reason why everyone loves this show and it’s not just because of Lip Gallagher. This series will take you through every emoting you can think of and just when you think you have it all figured out, something unexpected happens and you are back to square one. You can watch seasons 1-6 of the crazy Gallagher family in all its glory.
I only listed a few good shows to watch but there are many more, like “Supernatural” or “Parenthood.” Tell us what shows or movies you like to binge watch – we would love to hear from you!
