Cook County Judge Raymond Myles, 66, was killed and his 52-year-old girlfriend was wounded in a shooting Monday morning, according to CBS Chicago. Chicago Police is calling this shooting “a direct attack on the criminal justice system,” and i using all available resources to find the gunman responsible.
Chicago police responded to the shooting just before 5 a.m. and found Myles and his girlfriend shot outside of their home in the West Chesterfield neighborhood. They believe that Myles and the woman were getting ready to go to the gym when the shooting occurred.
Myles was pronounced dead, due to multiple gunshot wounds, at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at about 5:30 a.m. while the woman was in serious condition at Christ Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the leg.
“Every day, civil servants like Judge Myles, and those of us in law enforcement, work tirelessly to hold criminals accountable and make our streets safer," stated Chicago Police First Deputy Supt. Kevin Navarro at police headquarters Monday morning. "That’s why when incidents like this occur, it’s not only a reminder of the ever-present challenge we have with illegal guns, and the offenders willing to use them, but it’s also a direct attack on the criminal justice system that keeps our society safe.”
Detective Melissa Staples explained that the woman encountered the gunman first and after words were exchanged, the offender shot the female victim. Following the initial gunfire, Myles exited the home to find the gunman, exchanged words, and was then fatally shot.
A neighbor stated that he was awakened by the gunfire and screams. He recalled hearing six shots fired and a woman yelling, “Don’t kill him, don’t kill him!”
Investigators explained that the motive for the shooting is currently unknown, although they do believe it could have been a potentially robbery. Investigations are still underway for the motive as multiple private security videos are being reviewed.
Myles was an associate judge in Cook County Circuit Court’s Criminal Division and had been involved in several high-profile cases, one of which includes the notorious Brown’s Chicken massacre and the murders of singer Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew. Myles had been a Cook County judge since 1999 and in the criminal division since 2009.
Area South Detectives were those investigating the shooting and the FBI has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of the shooter.
