Heres What We Know-The Parkland, FL Shooting

February 21, 2018

On February 14, another tragic school shooting claimed the lives of 17 faculty and students at Marjory Stoneman Public High School in Parkland Florida. Although the story is still unraveling, this is what we know:

  • The suspect, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, is a former student of MSP High School. He went willingly into custody and confessed to the shooting. He is being held without bond and is facing 17 accounts of premeditated murder.

  • The shooting took place at roughly 2:15 that day and was captured on social media by many terrified students. Cruz shot at students and faculty using a AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle and claimed the lives of individuals ranging from 14 to 49 years old. Cruz was then able to escape the school undetected by ditching his vest and firearm in a stairwell and walking out with students who were evacuating the school.

  • The suspect is assumed to have a mental disability, as he is noted for having issues with mental illness in the past. Many believe that his mental instability is caused by the recent death of his mother.

People everywhere have been sending prays for those affected by the tragic shooting on social media, and calling for legislation to bring an end to gun violence in America. A local vigil was held to commemorate and honor those who lost their lives, with a special recognition to the athletic director and the football coach who gave his life shielding students from bullets. The victims are as follows: teacher Scoot Beigel, athletic director Christopher Hixon, coach and security monitor Aaron Fies, along with students Alyssa Alhadeff, Martin Duque Anguiano, Nichloas Dworet, Jamie Guttenberg, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup and Peter Wang.
