USF Presents “Little Shop of Horrors” Musical This Weekend

The University of St. Francis (USF) will be presenting the “sci-fi, horror-comedy” musical “Little Shop of Horrors” this weekend, according to a press release from the university. The musical will take place from April 5-6 at 7:30 p.m., with a final show on April 7 at 3:00 p.m. in the Sexton Auditorium (Moser Performing Arts Center) on USF’s main campus.

The musical tells the story of a meek floral assistant who discovers a strange and sensational new breed of plant, but soon learns it has devious intentions. The musical is directed by Daina Giesler, who returned to USF this past fall to head the university’s theater program. Music direction for the musical is by USF alumna Kaleigh Jerkatis, who graduated from the university in 2016. With book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, this hit show has “devoured audience’s hearts for decades with its catchy tunes and unexpected twists,” according to the press release.

In an interview, “Little Shop of Horrors” cast member and USF student, Bennie Radford, shared his experience with the musical.

Amber James: You have participated in musicals all of your life, so how is this one different from the others?

Bennie Radford: Well, I can definitely say this one will be the most rewarding when it is finished. We have worked many hours and late nights putting this show together for everyone. Fortunately, it has also brought all of us closer together and we have been able to motivate and encourage each other throughout the entire process. I hope that whoever comes to see the musical will notice that and enjoy themselves!

AJ: What is challenging about bringing this script to life?

BR: I think the most challenging part is that I am behind the curtain most of the time since I am the voice of the plant, Audrey II. People will not be able to see the emotion on my face, so making sure that my voice evokes as much emotion as possible will be important for the show to be successful.

Tickets are required to attend the event. According to the USF press release, tickets cost $10 each ($7 for seniors, alums, and non-USF students).
