Girls just want to have fun (and a good playlist)

There's something about that moment every year right when spring starts pretending it's summer that feels like a promise.  A subtle reminder that soon, we’ll be trading in our winter coats for summer swimsuits, Uggs for Birkenstocks, and midterm deadlines for day trips.

Every year, as the seasons shift, I, like many others, feed myself the same delusion: this will be the best summer ever.

Everybody knows spring and summer are peak girlhood, no doubt about it. It’s the era of lip gloss, tan lines, and friendships; it's the season where every day feels like it could be a movie montage.

I'm talking about the “Mamma Mia” level of delusion, where you’re convinced you could drop everything and move to a Greek island simply off vibes. Or “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”, where you and your best friend suddenly believe a pair of jeans could fix your whole life. Add “Aquamarine”, “Monte Carlo”, “The Last Song”; and basically anything else that involves beaches, best friends, a dramatic summer crush and you’re set for the summer.

Of course, no summer fantasy is complete without THE summer playlist.

You know the playlist: the one that could pretty much legally qualify as a personality trait, the sacred text of the season. Whether it’s a nostalgic song like “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry, something soft and shimmery like “Solar Power” by Lorde or a true classic like “Baby” by Justin Bieber, it's no secret that a good playlist makes you feel like you’re in a coming-of-age movie, even though you’re just going to Target.

But that's honestly the magic of it.

Spring and summer make everything bigger, brighter and more possible. Suddenly, you’re tanning in your backyard like it’s a full-time job, planning beach trips like you’re sponsored by the ocean and truly romanticizing that summer bonfire at your best friend's house. It’s girlhood at its finest.

One reason Drive Mad stands out is the balance between frustration and satisfaction. Every failed attempt makes the eventual success feel more rewarding.
